Custom Blinds & Shades: Measuring & Installation Guide
Measuring tips
- Use a metal tape measure for more accurate measurements.
- Round each measurement to the nearest 0.5 cm.
- Always write down the width first (left to right), then the height (top to bottom).
1. Choose the mount type
Blinds can be installed in different ways depending on your window, the available space, and the look you want.
Inside mount
This option is suitable when the blind is mounted inside the window frame. It creates a clean, understated look that blends seamlessly with the window.
Outside mount
This option is suitable when the blind is mounted outside the window frame, above the window or on the wall. It helps reduce light gaps at the sides, makes the window look larger, and provides clearance for obstacles such as a handle or window sash.
Window sash mount
This option is suitable when the blind is mounted directly on the window sash. It is especially recommended for inward-opening windows when there is not enough space for a standard installation.
2. Measuring for an inside mount
Before choosing this option, make sure the window frame is deep enough to accommodate the blind mechanism.
Measure the inside width of the window frame in three places: at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement.
Then measure the inside height of the window frame in three places: on the left, in the center, and on the right. Use the largest measurement.
Please do not subtract any centimeters from your measurements. A small amount of side clearance is needed for the blind to operate properly, and the necessary technical adjustments are made during manufacturing.
Blind height = total window height (glass + frame)
Please note:
If your measurements vary significantly or the window frame is not perfectly straight, an outside mount may be more suitable.
3. Measuring for an outside mount
Measure the full width and height of the area you want to cover. No deductions are needed.
For better light blocking and to reduce light gaps at the sides, we recommend allowing the blind to extend beyond both sides of the window.
If you want to install the blind above the window, be sure to account for nearby features such as a radiator, a protruding handle, or any other obstacle that could interfere with lowering the blind.
3.1 Outside mount: ceiling installation
This option is suitable when the blind is mounted on the ceiling or underneath a horizontal support above the window.
Blind width = full width of the area to cover
Blind height = window height + distance from the top of the window to the ceiling
Before choosing this mount type, make sure there is enough space for the blind when fully raised. Since the stack height varies by model, we recommend contacting our customer service team to confirm it before placing your order.
3.2 Outside mount: side installation
In this configuration, the blind is mounted outside the window frame, on the wall or on either side of the opening, depending on the window structure.
Follow the same measuring instructions as for an outside mount. For better window coverage, we recommend allowing the blind to extend beyond both sides.
4. Measuring for a window sash mount
The blind is mounted directly on the window sash.
Blind width = glass width + 2 cm
Blind height = glass height + 6 cm
Allow at least 1 cm of clearance from the handle or any other obstacle
This option is suitable when you want to mount the blind as close to the window sash as possible.
5. Blind stack height
The stack height of a blind varies depending on the SKU, fabric, mechanism, and final product dimensions.
There is no single stack height that applies to all models.
To find out the stack height of the custom blind you have selected, please contact our customer service team at: contact@sophoradeco.com
6. Important advice
If your window is irregular, has a protruding handle or an unusual opening, or you are unsure which mount type to choose, we recommend sending us a photo of your window along with your measurements. This will help us recommend the most suitable configuration before manufacturing.
